Green Mentor

In June 2023, I joined the story garden in Kings Cross. Our mission is to grow food, people and community for a just world. It has been such a wonderful experience to get to know the community and to see the abundance of opportunities that Global Generation offers. So far, I have attended two trips with the garden, one to Chelsea Physics Garden, which was very fun and educational - it was lovely to see the children curious about wildlife, especially the frogs in the glasshouses.

My role in the garden varies. One day, I might plant and water flowers and herbs in the area. On others, I’ll work directly with the community or volunteers to support and encourage greening and self-sustainability. Last week, I even helped build a bug hotel. I love my role because every day is different, and I am surrounded by beautiful pockets of nature amidst the concrete city.

The garden is such a magical place, and I am so glad to have found it. There are many chances to learn about the environment and permaculture from passionate and kind-hearted people in the garden and local community. My experience of being a green mentor has shown me that the changes I want to see in the world, like tackling climate change, being more self-sustainable, spreading love and environmental awareness, and fostering a sense of belonging in the community, start as small as a seed.
